The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town is a mixed-use development comprising of residential and commercial property, hotels, retail stores, dining, leisure and entertainment facilities. Spanning 123 hectares, it’s a tourism landmark which is one of Africa’s most visited destinations.
A restaurant within the V&A Waterfront was being revamped for a new tenant and consulting engineers specified a Kitchen Suppression System for two of the canopies within the restaurant. Partnering with SSC Infrasek, the Kitchen Fire Suppression from FSD was selected as the best option for price and features as well as approvals.
WHY THE AUTOMATIC SUPPRESSION (ACTIVE PROTECTION)?
For nearly a half century, automatic fire sprinklers have been an important single system for automatic control of hostile fires in buildings. Other automatic extinguishing systems (i.e. carbon dioxide, dry chemical, clean system agents (halon replacement), and high expansion foam), may be used to provide protection for specific portions of a building where they are particularly suited.
The Kitchen Hood Fire Suppression System is used for industrial kitchens as it offers fast and low-cost installation, wider nozzle protection area, easy and low-cost maintenance.
Due to a limited amount of space, the Kitchen Suppression System had to be placed inside the ceiling void. There were also time constraints as the restaurant had to be ready for their grand opening, and because of the high standards of operation within the V&A Waterfront, the restaurant needed to comply with SANS 1850 standards for kitchen suppression.
The FSD Kitchen Hood Fire Suppression System was an easy choice as it is low-cost, complies with SANS 1850 standards, has ease of installation and the lowest cost of ownership.
RESULTS, RETURN ON INVESTMENT AND FUTURE PLANS
The Kitchen Fire Suppression System was installed and commissioned within the allocated time, allowing the end user to start operating his restaurant and begin commercial operation.
After this installation, SSC Infrasek sent an additional 8 staff members for product training with Fire and Security Distributors. The end user now has a system with the lowest total cost of ownership on the market and has assurance that the business and staff members are protected from the devastating effects of fire.
